About us
Black Tansy Farm is a small family farm located in Springfield, Oregon. We (Tom and Gwynne) started Black Tansy Farm because we believe that the industrialized food production system is broken and harms everyone involved, including the animals, farmers, consumers, and environment. Our goal is to produce healthier meat to feed our local community, while ensuring the best possible lives for our animals and stewarding the environment to the best of our ability. We use a rotational grazing system, which allows all of our animals to forage on lush green pasture for the majority of the year. During our wet and muddy winters we provide a ‘sacrifice area’ for livestock to shelter and loaf without damaging the pasture grasses. We do not use any pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or unnecessary antibiotics (we do use them to treat acutely sick animals). We raise heritage breeds that are family-friendly, easy on the land, and have hardy constitutions. Too many of the livestock breeds raised for high-quantity commercial meat operations have a poor quality of life, even in well-managed healthy environments, because they have been bred and genetically modified to grow too fast for their physiological systems to sustain. We have chosen slower-growing breeds that develop at rates their bodies can sustain. Our animals are part of our family. We do the very best we can to ensure that they have a healthy and happy life while they are in our care.
